Part 3: Location - present
On September 16, 1945, the sod had been turned for the new building by the late Bishop, the Right Reverend P.S. Abraham in the presence of a large gathering. The architect, Mr. F.A. Colbourne, a member of the congregation, used a modern design for the building which measures 174 feet long, 55 feet wide, and provides a seating capacity of 900 persons. In addition to a chapel, there are choir rooms, a sacristy, and a vestry. It is said that the reason there is no basement was not by design, but that then the foundation was being dug an enormous rock created an impenetrable barrier. This was indeed a church 'built upon a rock.'! Through a rift in this rock, a well was discovered; since by coincidence, the sexton's name was Joseph, someone facetiously called it "Joseph's Well" - a name which was remembered for some time. Through his long years of service, Father [Thomas] Greavett was instrumental in the stimulating and supporting the efforts of the officers and members of the congregation. Together their devoted activities saw remarkable achievements culminating in the dedication of the new church which stands on its present site at the corner of St. Clare Avenue and LeMarchant Road. On Sunday, September 30, 1956, the new church was officially opened for Divine Worship. The date was within the octave of the Patronal Festival of St. Michael and All Angels. In the Spring of 1981, the parish hall was officially opened. This project was one of the significant contributions made by Father Donald Frederick Harvey (affectionately known as 'Father Don'), during his seven years spent at St. Michael's. Meetings of church organizations had been held in the basement of the Casey Street building until it was sold, when a Government building on Rickett's Road was bought for one dollar. The main auditorium of the new Parish Hall is named in honour of Father Nichols; the upstairs complex is dedicated to Father Honeygold, and Father Greavett's name is given to the downstairs conference room. The kitchen was completed by free labour of some parishioners, who have also contributed much free time and effort since in then in making necessary adaptations to the hall. |
